Introduction
Chapter 1: Getting Started
Introduction We are at our best when we share with others. Whether it is knowledge, money, or simply time, people gain when they give. This book is about sharing yourself through volunteering.
How Much? Before volunteering, one of the first things you have to do is to assess your level of involvement. You’ll have to make the best use of your abilities and time in order to maximize your effectiveness. For those already involved, you may be ready and able to increase your involvement, perhaps from an episodic commitment to a longer term one.
What the Nonprofit Expects of You If you are volunteering for a one-time project, you should be prepared to show up on time, with a smile and a great attitude.
When volunteering in an ongoing capacity, the nonprofit has a right to expect certain behavior on your part that will maximize your impact upon their programs.
Kathleen Murray In January of 2002, Kathleen Murray began a remarkable journey, hopscotching across the country to volunteer for a month at a time at over a dozen organizations in as many states. Her goal was to work for causes she cared deeply about, such as children’s issues, poverty, and aging. At the same time, this work provided her a podium from which to raise awareness of the importance for more volunteerism nationally.
