introduction
Americans
are a generous and compassionate people. Independent Sector reported
that in the year 2000, approximately 89% of US households donated an
average of $1,620 to charitable organizations. During that year, almost
84 million adults volunteered and it is estimated that for the year
2004, the dollar value of volunteer hours was equivalent to $272 billion.
Despite these commendable numbers, less than half of us volunteer.
Why the book? We know that people who have not been volunteering are
generous and compassionate as well. If you are one of these people,
there is a good chance that you just need to be given information about
how to make the connection with the right volunteer opportunity. If
you currently volunteer, you may want to move from intermittent volunteering
to something longer-term. Giving from Your Heart, A Guide to Volunteering was
written for all of you.
After traveling the country, and seeing volunteers serving nonprofit
agencies, Bob and Guy wrote Giving from Your Heart to enable
people to overcome the real and imagined obstacles to volunteering.
Armed with new knowledge, most of you will be able to move from thinking
about volunteering to actually making the connection. The book combines
the stories of inspirational volunteers with a step-by-step approach
to identify what will work best for you. Read
an excerpt to get a feel
for what’s inside as you consider the joys and benefits of volunteering.
Bob and Guy have gifted the book to Volunteer For Good and all proceeds
from its sale will help Volunteer For Good fulfill its mission.
The mission of Volunteer For Good is to educate, inspire and assist you
in connecting with volunteering. By reading Giving from Your Heart you
will be much closer to this reality. If you have not yet read it, we’ve
made it easy for you to order it online. Happy reading.
